What to expect from a traditional Thai massage

What is traditional Thai massage?

Traditional Thai massage treatment in Budapest in the Buda Thai Massage salon.

Traditional Thai massage is a full-body technique using compressions and stretches. It’s often called “Thai yoga massage” because it includes passive stretching, joint mobilization, and rhythmic pressure applied to different points of the body. It is usually performed without oil, wearing comfortable clothing.

In Budapest, it’s especially popular because sedentary work, driving, and lack of movement often lead to stiffness in the hips, lower back, and spine areas, where Thai massage is particularly effective at relieving that “restricted” feeling.

How does a session work? (Step by step)

  1. Arrival and brief consultation
Share your goals in a few sentences. Let your therapist know about any sensitive areas, previous injuries, or recent muscle soreness.
  2. The treatment
Rhythmic pressure, mobilization, and stretching techniques alternate. The therapist continuously observes how your body responds.
  3. End of the session
You’ll be given time to slowly sit up and stand. Drinking a glass of water is recommended.
  4. Aftercare tips
Light activity, such as a gentle walk, and plenty of fluids are ideal for the rest of the day.

Is Thai massage painful?

Thai massage can be intense, but the goal is not pain. The best experience is when the pressure feels deep in a positive way yet remains comfortable. Communication is key, but don’t hesitate to tell your therapist if you want more or less pressure.

After the session, you’ll typically feel lighter and more flexible. Mild muscle soreness can occasionally occur.

Who is it recommended for, and when should you be cautious?

Recommendedif you:

  • sit a lot and feel stiffness in the hips, back, or neck
  • want a full-body mobilizing treatment
  • practice sports and want improved mobility and flexibility

Caution and prior consultation are advisedif you:

  • have an acute injury, inflammation, or recent strain
  • are recovering from surgery or have serious musculoskeletal issues

If you’re looking for a thorough, head-to-toe treatment that loosens tight, stiff muscles, traditional Thai massage can be an excellent choice.

Traditional Hilot massage in Budapest – what makes it special and who is it perfect for?

Hilot massage is less widely known, yet it’s a very distinctive traditional Filipino technique. In Budapest, you can experience traditional Hilot as a standalone treatment for the first time at the Buda Oriental Massage salon.

What is Hilot?

Hilot originates from Filipino tradition and is known for its diagnostic, targeted approach. Instead of working evenly across the body, it maps tension and focuses precisely where your body needs it most.

One of the defining characteristics of Hilot is that the treatment does not always move evenly across the entire body. Instead, the therapist places greater emphasis on areas where tension is more pronounced, such as the neck and shoulders, the area around the shoulder blades, or the lower back.

As a result, the experience is often more targeted, with less stretching and more conscious, precise pressure work. Compared to Thai massage, Hilot is generally less about full-body mobilization and focuses more on releasing tight, knotted muscles and restoring a more comfortable, balanced sense of well-being.

What does a Hilot massage feel like?

As an oil-based treatment, Hilot is generally comfortable yet firm. Tight areas can feel sensitive, but the work is gradual rather than overwhelming. Communication is just as important here—guide your therapist on where to apply more or less pressure.

After the session, hydration, rest, and gentle movement (such as walking) are recommended. Mild soreness the next day is possible if a very focused area was treated.

When can Hilot be especially helpful?

  • If your neck, shoulders, or back often feel “locked up”
  • If stress manifests in your shoulder girdle, shoulder blades, or lower back
  • If you prefer less stretching and more direct muscle work
  • If you’re curious about traditional Filipino techniques
  • If targeted treatment is important to you

Shiatsu massage – the Japanese finger-pressure technique

What is Shiatsu?

Shiatsu (literally “finger pressure”) is a traditional Japanese massage technique based on the principles of traditional Chinese medicine and the body’s meridian system. The therapist applies rhythmic pressure using fingers, palms, and sometimes elbows, complemented by gentle stretches when needed.

Shiatsu is usually performed fully clothed, without oil, often on a floor mat (futon), in a calm, minimalist environment. Its holistic approach makes it especially popular—it aims not only to address physical tension but also to restore mental and emotional balance. It’s particularly beneficial during stressful, demanding periods.

Does Shiatsu hurt?

Some points can feel sensitive due to existing tension, but the goal is always controlled, comfortable pressure. If anything feels too strong, simply let your therapist know. A good Shiatsu session is always adjusted based on your feedback.
